Preparing floors for installation or refinishing involves clearing the area, removing old flooring or carpeting, and ensuring the subfloor is clean, dry, and level. The key steps include removing old flooring, fixing squeaks with screws, and using leveling compound for dips.
Key Preparation Steps
- Acclimate Flooring: For new installations, let wood or vinyl flooring adjust in the room for 72-96 hours.
- Clear Area: Remove all furniture, fragile items, and wall décor.
- Remove Old Flooring & Trim: Take out existing carpets, padding, and baseboards or moldings.
- Inspect Subfloor: Check for moisture, rot, and unevenness.
- Concrete: Ensure it’s dry and level.
- Wood: Secure loose boards to prevent creaking.
- Clean Surface: Sweep and vacuum thoroughly. Sand high spots on the subfloor.
- Underlayment & Doors:
Install vapor barriers/underlayment. Trim door jambs or doors if necessary.
